It's time to get serious about BBCOR. This new standard measures bat performance and replaces the old standard called BESR. Starting in January 2011 for NCAA (college level) play and January 2012 for NFHS (high school level) play, all bats must be BBCOR certified. BBCOR (Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution) is a name convoluted enough to make even the geekiest ballplayer gulp. We'll try to explain it to you as best as we can.

Instead of measuring the speed of the ball after it is batted, BBCOR measures the "bounciness" of the ball and bat, or the "trampoline" effect. Whenever a bat hits a ball during a game, the ball actually compresses by nearly a third.

A pitched ball holds a lot of energy that you can see in the spin and speed of the ball. With solid wood bats, much of that energy is lost as the ball compresses at impact. The batted ball speed gets a lot of its energy from the bat. With hollow-core aluminum or composite bats, the thin walls "give" a little, and the ball distorts less and retains its pitched energy and adds to it the power of the bat speed. That's why non-wood bats hit balls faster.

The loss of energy at collision is what BBCOR measures. The less energy lost, the faster the ball speed after it gets launched off the bat.

I'm Still Confused.

A simple way to think of BBCOR is to jump up and down on a hard floor. It takes a lot of energy in your legs to get off the ground. The floor doesn't help at all. Contrast that feeling by jumping on a trampoline. Even with very little energy from your body, you will still get a bounce because that energy isn't being absorbed by the trampoline. Instead, the trampoline is flexing with the impact and then "bouncing" back to its original shape, thus launching you higher into the air.

Okay, so what does this mean for baseball?

It's that faster flight that has changed the game of baseball over the last several years. Home runs are far more common today as they were 20 years ago. With a 10-15% decrease in bat performance, the game will be much more balanced among all players. Slower balls will also address some of the safety concerns that have become more prevalent in recent years.

According to their own explanations of the new standard, both the NCAA and NFHS want all bats to have the same performance factors as the best wood bats. While it may still be cost effective to purchase aluminum or composite bats that will last longer than wood bats, it won't necessarily make you a better batter. You'll have to swing faster and more accurately to get the same hits as before.

Does this mean I need a new bat?

If your team plays under NCAA or NFHS guidelines, yes. You probably need a new bat. Fortunately, bat manufacturers have been able to adjust their designs with very little notice. The first BBCOR-certified bats start swinging into the warehouse in August 2010.

Manufacturers are modifying aluminum and composite bats to make the walls stiffer. Sometimes they are actually inserting a block behind the sweetspot so it won't flex as much. Other times they are simply adding thickness to the wall.

Adjusting to the new standards will certainly be difficult for some players, but the change will take the game back to its roots. Hitting With Big Barrel Bats in Youth League

My eight year old was playing baseball this fall on a coached pitched team. It was the perfect situation for the fall with only one practice every Sunday afternoon from 2:00-3:30. It was a great experience, one in which he learned a lot. He also had a great time with the other kids on the team. We were also playing flag football during the fall, so we didn't have a lot of time for extended fall ball, plus he is only 8 so I wasn't interested in having him involved with a team that was going to play games every week in the fall. I'm not a big proponent of playing year round baseball, but I'll save that for another article.

The coaches decided they would try to play a couple of games and put into action what they had been teaching during the Sunday practices. We traveled about 45 minutes away on a nice Saturday during the mid fall to play a double header with another eight year old team. It was a good experience but I was shocked when I watched the other team hit. Yes, they beat us in both games 20-8 and 17-9, but that wasn't what shocked me, it was the bats they were using - Big Barrel Bats.

Demarini Bats

Let me back up a little bit first. My eight year old is our youngest. My oldest is 26 (I was 40 when our youngest was born) and we have already went through Little League, Babe Ruth, Summer Ball, etc...with our oldest. Also, as a high school baseball coach I host youth camps every summer and thought I was in tune with what was happening in youth baseball. But the bats I saw the other eight year old team using that day caught me by complete surprise. Every player on the other team was using a big barrel (2-5/8 inch diameter) bat, even though they were only eight years old.

Hitting With Big Barrel Bats in Youth League

The big barrel bat is designed for senior league play, which is typically 13-15 year olds. I did a little investigation and found that all the manufacturers (Easton, DeMarini, Louisville, etc...) specifically advertised that these big barrel bats are not approved for younger youth league teams. This was reinforced more when I found out that most youth leagues (Cal Ripen, Little League, Pony, etc.,.) do not allow players to use the larger barrel bats. However, I did find it odd that the manufacturers are making -10 to -13 drop bats (the unit distinction between the length and the weight of the bat, such as 27 inches long and 17 ounces in weight). It's obvious that the sale of these ultra-light, big- barrel bats are targeted at youth league players.

Youth league (ages 6-12) aluminum bats are typically 2 ¼ inches in diameter at the sweet spot and usually have a -8 in drop. The idea is to work up as they get older and eventually get to the -3 drop bat that is required in high school.

The problem with using big barrel bats at such a young age is it doesn't reinforce hitting mechanics. When a young hitter swings and misses the sweet spot, this reinforces the fact they need to use their hands to hit instead of their arms. The sweet spot is located 4-7 inches from the barrel end of the bat, located between the bat's trademark and the end of the bat. With aluminum (or composite bats) when the player misses the sweet spot, the bat jars in their hands. With a wood bat (which I think all young players should spend time learning to hit with) if the sweet spot is missed, the ball won't travel very far, maybe a ground ball to second or short. Anyway, it reinforces the need to rotate the hips and use the hands to get the barrel of the bat on the ball. With much practice, a player can become good at making consistent contact on the sweet spot of the bat. Using the hands correctly will strengthen the hands as they get older and allow them to progress in their mechanics as a hitter. Many players struggle with hitting on high school freshman or JV teams because they drag the bat head with the -3 bats that are required by the National Federation Rules. They have been swinging the -8 and -5 bats with their arms and the -3 is even heavier for them to swing. They haven't developed good strong hands from hitting properly.

The problem with the big barrel bats is the extended hitting zones. The player can have a long swing (one that disconnects with the arms getting away from the body) hitting the ball on the area below the sweet spot near the trademark and still get a solid base hit into the outfield. This was what I witnessed that Saturday this fall during the eight year old coached-pitched game. Most of the hitters in the opposing team line up used more arms than hands to hit, but they still had solid shots into the outfield. In fact, the few times they did make solid contact, the ball was sent like a laser to the outfield fences. Several times our players got hit with the ball (one in the head on a line drive to center field) and the coach was also hit by a hot line drive back to the mound. It was a little scary and these young players were not ready to be swinging these bats.

During my research I also found hitting with big barrel bats was common practice for travel league teams during the summer and fall. Most travel tournament sponsors do not have regulations against using larger barrel bats for youth league ages. With the manufacture warnings clearly listed on these bats, this may be a serious spot for litigation. The travel tournament sponsors and teams that use these bats against the manufacture warnings are exposing themselves to potential lawsuits.

From a hitting stand point, players will never understand their hitting flaws. It's like the weekend golfer that uses a monster head driver, one that corrects the flight of the ball if the swing is not perfect. As long as you make contact anywhere on the face of the club, you're in good shape. (I got one in my golf bag) The same is true for the large barrel bats for youth leagues. See, hitting a baseball is difficult and one that comes with much failure. A good big league player that hits around .300 will fail 7 out of 10 times. With young hitters, the failure is what makes them better. Missing the sweet spot on the bat reinforces the idea to use your hands and get the barrel on the ball.

If you're serious about your young player being a better hitter make him use the 2 ¼ inch barrel in youth league. He can also work with a wood bat in practices and scrimmage games. (or summer league play). Use bamboo when they are young (ages 6-9), moving to maple by the time they are 11 or 12 years old. Both of these bats are extremely durable and hard to break. By the time they are 15-16 years old they can graduate to a nice Ash bat. Most big leaguers use either Ash or Maple. All of our high school players have a wood bat in their bag and train with it regularly.

Don't delay the development of your youth league hitter by allowing them to use a big barrel bat. Rotate your hips and use your hands to hit the SWEET SPOT.

Baseball has been around for decades, often times recognized as "America's national sport". Historical evidence of baseball indicates that its roots stem from cricket and rounders, both very popular games originating in Great Britain. The baseball we know and love today has gradually developed over many years. By the end of the 18th century, many forms of baseball were being played all over the United States. In New York City, they played a game called "One o' Cat". Other cities were playing "Town Ball" and "New York Ball". These early renditions of the sport were played on a square field. Originally for bases they used stakes, later replacing the stakes with stones, but to prevent further injuries, the stones were then replaced with sand filled sacks. It wasn't until then that people started to call them bases and this is where the name "baseball" originated.

It wasn't until somewhere between 1850 and 1860 that baseball became increasingly popular and in 1869, professional baseball was introduced by the Cincinnati Red Stockings. Other official teams represented cities from Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Brooklyn, Cleveland, New York, Ohio and four other cities. Several other teams were added throughout the next quarter of the century. In 1900, what we know as the American League was founded and fought for many years to be recognized as an equal to the National League. Jackie Robinson was the first black player to join the Major Leagues in 1947, playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

No matter what you are trying to accomplish at the plate, your plan should include hitting the ball hard every time you swing. The best hitters in any game will be trying to crush the ball every time. Sometimes the result is a 400′+ bomb other times a laser in the gap or screaming humpy in front of the outfield. The fact is that you don't get anything positive done at the plate without bat speed.

Here are a few tips, which with practice should help you to improve your bat speed:

Keep your hands loose. Maintaining a loose grip on the softball or baseball bat will gain you 5 mph of bat speed and 5-10 mph of ball speed. Tension in your hands will cost you bat speed.

Push with your back hand while pulling with your front hand. The push will increase your power and improve your follow through.

Release your top hand off the bat. Doing this will allow you more extension which translates to more power.

Keep your hands out in front of the bat. Throw your hands at the ball so that the bat head is the last thing that comes through the zone.

Hit the bottom half of the ball. This creates back spin which will carry the ball farther.

Shift your weight. Make sure you are shifting your weight from your back foot to your front foot.

Make contact slightly in front of where you are standing. This point is where you will be generating max bat speed. Too far in front and the bat will be decelerating when you hit the ball. Too early in your swing, and you will not be generating enough speed and leverage.

Adjust your grip. Drop your pinky finger off the knob to get more leverage.

Choose pitches in your "power zone". You have a zone where you hit with the most power. Learn it in batting practice, be patient & really work on pitch selection.

Head on the ball. Start your swing with your chin on your front shoulder, and end with your chin on your back shoulder. This will keep your head down on the ball and prevent you from opening up too soon & losing power.

Range of motion- Start with the bat back as far as you can. That complete range of motion will allow you to create as much momentum as you can prior to contact.

Each improvement or piece of knowledge that you add to your arsenal can mean one, maybe two, maybe even five mph to your bat speed. It is those incremental gains that you make to your bat and ball speed that gradually make you a better softball or baseball player. Nobody ever knows the limits of their potential. You will be surprised what you are capable of if you apply proven techniques and practice hard. If you desire to hit with more power and consistency, you can and will. It is up to you!

Five Fundamental Steps For Good First Base Play

First base in baseball is more difficult to play than most people think. Good first basemen save their teams countless runs during the course of the season. They do this by using proper footwork and balance. Not all throws from infielders are on the mark. Low throws, wide throws, high throws, and every kind in between are what the first basemen must deal with. So, here are the top five footwork steps a fundamentally sound first baseman does.

1. Get to the Base Quickly

The first baseman should read the ball off the bat, and when it is hit on the ground, he should run to first base as quickly as possible. Naturally, he must take his eye off the ball, but experienced first sackers know where the base is almost instinctively. They use peripheral vision and repetition to know exactly where the base is and how many running strides it takes to get there -- but all first basemen take their eyes off the ground ball. Of course, when they get to the base, they find the ball and focus on the next step.

2. Set Up Correctly at the Base

Set up next to the base in fair territory and face the infielder who is fielding the ground ball. With his chest facing the infielder, the first baseman gives the best target possible to the fielding infielder. With four infield positions besides first base (the pitcher is now an infielder too!), there are four general directional angles the first baseman can use. Do not put either foot on the base -- yet. He should be in an athletic, ready position to catch any potential bad throw.

3. Read the Throw From the Infielder

This can't be overstated. From his athletic, ready position the first baseman now reads the inbound throw. Is it high, wide, or low? How much velocity does it have? Which infielder threw the ball? This last question is important because every player has a unique flight to their throws. Some infielders throw with high velocity all the time. Some have a natural sink to their throws. Experienced first baseman read the throw first, before moving his feet.

It's very important the first baseman not stretch to receive the ball until the throw is in flight and he has read it correctly. When I started playing first base in professional baseball, I did this incorrectly all the time. And many times the direction of my stretch was not the direction of the incoming throw -- and it cost my team precious runs.

4. Use Footwork to Receive the Throw and Touch the Base

When a good throw is in flight, the first baseman now moves his feet to make the catch while touching the base. Either foot can be used to touch the base; however, most young players always use the same foot every time. This is okay, but more experienced first baseman learn to use either foot to touch the base -- depending on the throw's direction.

For instance, if the throw is to the outside of the base toward right field, he will put his left foot on the base while striding out with his right foot in order to reach the ball. Conversely, when the throw is inside the base (toward home plate), his right foot is on the base and left foot is striding. By switching feet this way, he extends his potential reach by a good margin. And, for throws directly at the first baseman, either foot can be used to touch the base.

It's very important the first baseman not put his foot in the middle of the base. Players can get injured if this happens. We've all seen youth league first baseman put their foot in the middle of the base and the base runner either trips over it, or steps on it, thus injuring either the runner, first baseman, or both.

First baseman should always touch the inside of the base, not the top of the base. Inside means the edge of the base that faces the infield. Bases are approximately three to four inches high and have a crowned top. The sides of the base are high enough for the first baseman's foot to fit next to, or on the top edge of, the base. Also when throws are wide, either outside or inside, the corners of the base extend his reach and should be used.

5. Adjust to Poor Throws

The third step in our series here described reading the throw. If the first baseman determines that the throw is completely off line, he should use footwork to come off the base. Only repetition and experience can tell the player when to do this. In these instances, don't worry about touching the base, just make the catch. This prevents the batter-runner from advancing to second base, or other base runners from either advancing or scoring.

Low throws are another matter. If the low throw will skip far enough away from the first baseman, he should stay square to the throw and not attempt to stretch out for it. The idea is to provide time and distance to read the hop and hopefully catch the ball. Good first baseman know when to stretch for low throws and when to stay back and receive them on a long hop.

In between hops are tough. These are low throws that will not provide either a long or short hop. But, with the largest glove on the field, some first baseman get lucky and the ball bounces in to their glove. My rule on these throws is to relax your glove hand and do the best you can. But, and this is important, if there are base runners who will score when the ball gets by the first baseman, the first bagger should get in front of the low throw and block it. The batter-runner will most likely be safe, but it has prevented a run from scoring and given our team a fighting chance.

A cult hero among avid players, Ray DeMarini emerged on the professional softball scene at age 40, a veritable geriatric among younger players. With a scientific approach to training, a batting speed of 96 miles per hour and a bombastic attitude, DeMarini fast earned a reputation as a savage competitor.

In June 1987, ESPN launched a nationwide search for a hardcore player to advise on a series of instructional softball videos. When approached by producer Erich Lytle, the biggest names in softball repeatedly spoke of a five-foot-seven softball giant--Ray DeMarini. DeMarini had mastered reflex hitting, a technique that drops the ball squarely between the infield and outfield. Impressed with DeMarini's knowledge and scientific approach to training, Lytle not only hired DeMarini as an advisor, he hired him as the host. Together, they produced Ray DeMarini's Reflex Hitting System.

Having garnered national recognition through ESPN, DeMarini turned his efforts toward designing a high-performance bat for the masses. To accomplish this, he needed an engineer. DeMarini's call was answered by Mike Eggiman. Having grown up on a farm, Eggiman was adept at making the most of a situation. Case in point: the company's first piece of automated bat-making equipment was powered by an abandoned washing machine. With Eggiman as chief engineer, DeMarini Sports delivered a series of industry firsts: the first multi-wall bat (Doublewall Distance), the first high-performance bat for massive players (Fatboy), and the first high-performance youth bat (Black Coyote).

With more than 225 team switching to DeMarini in the past five years, DeMarini ranks among the leading name in college baseball and college softball. In 2007, three college baseball national champions won swinging DeMarini bats: Oregon State University in Division I, University of Tampa in Division II, and Kean University in Division III.

Choosing the Right Baseball Bat
For a relatively simple piece of equipment, the variety of options when it comes to buying a baseball bat--wood or aluminum? what size is right for me? should I pay or 0?--can be intimidating. The most important factor to keep in mind, from Little League to the pros, is that buying a bat is a personal decision. It's critical to select a bat properly tailored to your height, weight, skill, and strength levels, within your budget, but equally important is simply how the bat "feels" to you.

Improvements in technology have given today's players more options than ever. A few basic rules of thumb, however, can help narrow your search:

Weight: Heavier bats provide more power while lighter bats enables faster swing speeds. Are you strong and athletic, or smaller and more likely to benefit from greater swing speed? Practice-swing a number of differently weighted bats until you find one that's right for you.
Drop: A bat's drop is its length-to-weight ratio, measured as a negative number. For example, a 34-inch bat with a -6 ratio weighs 28-ounces. The larger the drop, the faster the swing speed, while smaller drops are associated with greater power.
Length: Longer bats provide greater reach and ability to connect with pitches on the other side of the plate, but the added weight can reduce swing speed and power. Once again, the best approach is to experiment with different lengths to find a bat that suits you.
Barrel Diameter: As a general rule of thumb, players age 12 and under should use a 2.25-inch barrel diameter to comply with the majority of youth league regulations. Older players, through high school and college, are typically restricted to a 2.625-inch barrel diameter.
League Rules: Most leagues have their own bat requirements, and it's a good idea to be clear on your league's specifications before shopping.
Feel: The most crucial factor ultimately comes down to whether a bat feels good to you. It should be comfortable in your hands, have a balanced and fluid swing, and seem like a natural extension of your arms.

Anatomy of a Bat
While bat terminology and technology can seem complex, all bats are made up of three basic components--grip, bat taper, and barrel size.

Grip: The bat handle covering, typically made of leather or synthetic leather for a solid grip, or rubber (sometimes with cushioning) to decrease sting when striking the ball.
Bat Taper: The diameter of a bat's handle, with a standard taper being 0.97-inches (which can vary based on weight). A larger taper reduces ball shock while adding weight, and smaller tapers enable faster wrist rotation while reducing weight.
Barrel Size: Includes the length and diameter of the barrel, or top part, of the bat. Longer barrels provide larger, more forgiving sweet spots, and several different diameters are available.

Different Materials for Different Players
The sheer number of bat materials available today can boggle the mind, but ultimately the options are grouped into three categories--wood, aluminum, and composite.

Wood
Although the sound of a wood bat hitting a baseball has become iconic, the number of players using wood bats is typically restricted to professionals and wood-bat-only leagues. Whether you're a Major Leaguer or simply a baseball purist, look for a bat with a long, wide grain, which indicates a dense, mature tree. Wood bats offer more choices in terms of shape and taper to customize to a player's swing. On the other hand, they have three significant disadvantages: tendency to crack or break, smaller sweet spot, and less hitting power than metal bats.

Aluminum
A majority of non-professional players today use aluminum bats, mostly due to their lighter weight (which increases swing speed and control) and better durability. Aluminum bats come in single- or double-layer construction, with double-layer bats offering greater durability, power, and rebound.

Aluminum bats are constructed from a variety of alloys. Lighter alloys are thinner and more durable, and the alloy used in an aluminum bat is typically the most significant cost factor. Nearly all aluminum bat alloys represent some combination of aluminum, copper, magnesium, and zinc. Here's a quick overview of today's most popular aluminum alloys:

7046: This durable alloys has been a baseball industry standard for many years, and offers a good balance of price and performance.
CU31/7050: One of the first high-performance bat alloys, this proven option is more durable than 7046 as a result of greater levels of copper, magnesium, and zirconium.
C405/7055: A common alloy used in more expensive, high-end aluminum bats, this alloy includes greater zirconium content than CU31/7050 for added strength.
C555: The addition of scandium to this alloy results in up to 10% more strength than C405/7055.

Composite
Advances in technology have allowed manufacturers to use lighter, stronger composite materials--typically a combination of graphite, fiberglass, and resin--to produce bats with a unique, satisfying feel and large, forgiving sweet spots. Composite bats are lighter than traditional aluminum bats, increasing swing speed and power. Composites also come in single- and double-layer configurations, and graphite and titanium materials added to the inner wall help reduce vibration and "ball sting" when a ball is mis-hit.

Worth the Weight
Bats are weighted in ounces with emphasis on balancing length-to-weight ratio, a measure called a bat's "drop" and shown as -6, -8, as mentioned above. Larger drops offer faster swing speed--and, generally speaking, a steeper price tag--while smaller drops have greater power. Many players, when using a bat with a small drop, benefit a shorter bat to speed their swing.

Choosing the right weight depends on the type of player you are, as stronger players typically benefit from the power of a heavier bat, while smaller or younger players enjoy the increased swing speed and control of a lighter bat. There are, however, general guidelines for ideal bat weight based on player age, as well as weight or height. Off the shelf, none of the models today could be my old 1999 DeMarini double wall (which I no longer own) to compare. Personally, I do not know how the new restrictions. When the 93 mph limit is then introduced to the ASA is notDoubt asked to assume roles as OK. The idea would be that most players would do it, and the bats to a 98 mph standard will conduct, after he rolled.

Improvements in technology have given today's players more options than ever. A few basic rules of thumb, however, can help narrow your search:

Weight: Heavier bats provide more power while lighter bats enables faster swing speeds. Are you strong and athletic, or smaller and more likely to benefit from greater swing speed? Practice-swing a number of differently weighted bats until you find one that's right for you.
Drop: A bat's drop is its length-to-weight ratio, measured as a negative number. For example, a 34-inch bat with a -6 ratio weighs 28-ounces. The larger the drop, the faster the swing speed, while smaller drops are associated with greater power.
Length: Longer bats provide greater reach and ability to connect with pitches on the other side of the plate, but the added weight can reduce swing speed and power. Once again, the best approach is to experiment with different lengths to find a bat that suits you.
Barrel Diameter: As a general rule of thumb, players age 12 and under should use a 2.25-inch barrel diameter to comply with the majority of youth league regulations. Older players, through high school and college, are typically restricted to a 2.625-inch barrel diameter.
League Rules: Most leagues have their own bat requirements, and it's a good idea to be clear on your league's specifications before shopping.
Feel: The most crucial factor ultimately comes down to whether a bat feels good to you. It should be comfortable in your hands, have a balanced and fluid swing, and seem like a natural extension of your arms.

Anatomy of a Bat
While bat terminology and technology can seem complex, all bats are made up of three basic components--grip, bat taper, and barrel size.

Grip: The bat handle covering, typically made of leather or synthetic leather for a solid grip, or rubber (sometimes with cushioning) to decrease sting when striking the ball.
Bat Taper: The diameter of a bat's handle, with a standard taper being 0.97-inches (which can vary based on weight). A larger taper reduces ball shock while adding weight, and smaller tapers enable faster wrist rotation while reducing weight.
Barrel Size: Includes the length and diameter of the barrel, or top part, of the bat. Longer barrels provide larger, more forgiving sweet spots, and several different diameters are available.

7046: This durable alloys has been a baseball industry standard for many years, and offers a good balance of price and performance.
CU31/7050: One of the first high-performance bat alloys, this proven option is more durable than 7046 as a result of greater levels of copper, magnesium, and zirconium.
C405/7055: A common alloy used in more expensive, high-end aluminum bats, this alloy includes greater zirconium content than CU31/7050 for added strength.
C555: The addition of scandium to this alloy results in up to 10% more strength than C405/7055.

The first part of the concept is the attitude that the player does when he is at the plate. Basically there are two conversations, open and closed. An open stance is when the batter is up to the plate with the front of his body almost before the pitcher. In other words, his body exposed, or open the pot. Aclosed position is when the dough is at the plate and his body is at a 90 degree angle or even smaller for opposing pitchers. The advantage of an open attitude is that you swing the bat faster after the ball is released, because you're almost in a swing position to start with. The disadvantage of an open mind that is on the inside pitches that you are more likely to pull the ball foul. The advantage of a closed stance, is that you can generate more power when you hit the ball, because is further swung the bat. In addition, a unified stance on the ball makes you wait longer and keeps you from committing too early. Depending on the players' individual strengths and weaknesses, a particular position will be elected.

Apart from the approach, it indicates how far the bat, a batter will keep it. Prefer some dough, the hitting home runs on the contact it will choke on the bat. This gives them more control.
